India–UK Deepen Defence Cooperation with Focus on Naval Electric Propulsion

Key Highlights:
- 4 Landing Platform Docks (LPDs): India and the UK are set to sign an Inter-Governmental Agreement for the development of Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) systems for four Indian Navy LPDs.
- Indigenous capability: The programme is aimed at developing advanced electric-propulsion technology within India, with the objective of supporting domestic design, engineering and manufacturing capabilities.
- Technology collaboration: The proposed agreement builds on the India–UK cooperation framework for co-design, co-creation and co-production of electric-propulsion capabilities for future naval platforms.
- Growing naval requirements: India is pursuing expansion and modernisation of its naval fleet, with discussions also covering advanced propulsion, power-management and other naval technologies.
- GE Vernova partnership: GE Vernova is expected to participate in the programme and has partnered with BHEL to establish India's first maritime land-based testing facility for IFEP technology.
Key Observations:
Technology collaboration + Indigenous Manufacturing + Naval Modernisation are supporting the development of capabilities within India's defence manufacturing ecosystem. The India–UK propulsion programme combines access to specialised technology with the objective of building capabilities within India's shipbuilding and engineering ecosystem.
