Indian Market Update
- Nifty 50 declined 1.24% in August, while broader indices stayed positive. Midcaps gained 1.72% and Smallcaps gained 2.52%, reflecting strength beyond large caps.
- Sectorally, Defence and Metal led with gains of 4.15% and 3.73% respectively, while FMCG and Energy declined by -6.30% and -2.01% respectively.
- Factor indices showed mixed trends overall as Momentum led with a 4.97% gain, while Quality posted a marginal decline of -0.83%. Low Volatility was down by 2.77% and Enhanced Value declined by -1.63%.
- Nifty 500 posted a marginal decline of -0.04%, with gains in Industrials, Consumer Discretionary and Healthcare offset by weakness in FMCG, Utilities and Telecommunication.
Global Market Update
- S&P 500 gained 2.62% in August, as Information Technology contributed 2.31% to the index return, while Industrials and Utilities sectors also weighed on it slightly.
- Emerging markets showed a broad based rally overall, as South Africa, Taiwan and Korea gained 11.00%, 6.34% and 5.82% respectively while Brazil declined by 2.18%.
- Developed markets stayed mixed this month, as Japan gained 3.33% and Germany rose 3.93%, while France declined 1.04%.
- Crude oil rose modestly by 1.29% in the month, touching $85.76 a barrel, while Gold surged 13.32% to $4,562 an ounce. USD/INR also remained nearly flat with a -0.24% move.
- Crypto markets maintain.ed their upward momentum this month, with Ethereum gaining 31.02% and Bitcoin rising 22.18%, while both remained lower over the preceding one-year period
Economic Indicators
India
- CPI inflation edged up to 4.45% from 4.30%, while the repo rate held steady at 5.25% and the 10-year yield rose slightly to 6.95%.
- FII inflows moderated to ₹25,492 crore, while DII equity inflows stood strong at ₹62,125 crore, offsetting DII debt outflows of ₹53,749 crore.
US
- CPI inflation fell to 3.40% from 3.50%, even as the Fed kept rates unchanged at 3.75%.
- US Tax Receipts fell to $334 Bn from $496 Bn one month prior, while the 10-year yield also rose slightly to 4.75%.
